(Melanargia ines)
The single biggest threat to butterfly survival is habitat destruction!!
Spanish Marbled Whites fly almost exclusively in hot, rocky, scrubby areas with grasses.
They produce just a single brood.
Depending on location and in particular on altitude above sea level, the adults emerge between early April and the end of June.
They breed at elevations up to about 1500m but may be found hilltopping at much higher elevations.
Unlike most butterflies, they have a unique mating dance where males and females perform a harmonious, aerial ballet before coupling.
They engage in pollination predominantly for the nutritional benefit of pollen.
Attracted by the vivid colors and specific shapes of flowers, their interaction with plants inadvertently results in pollination. While feeding, pollen grains attach to their bodies and are transferred from bloom to bloom, facilitating the reproductive cycle of plants.
Melanargia ines have very long life spans of up to 12 mos.
