Butterfly populations are a very good indicator of the health of an area's ecosystem !!
Melanis pixie is found in the Lower Rio Grande Valley of South Texas all the way south to Costa Rica.
The preferred terrain is lowlands along rivers, tropical forest and city parks.
They have a very distinctive appearance with the dorsal side of the wings being black.
The tip of forewings is yellow orange and the base has a red spot.
The hindwing outer margin has a band of red spots



Diet: caterpillars feed on Albizia caribea, Inga species and Pithecellobium species (including Pithecellobium dulce).
Diet: adults take nectar from flowers of Pithecellobium, Albizia, Inga, Coffea, Cordia, Lantana, and Citrus.
Avg. wingspan: 3.8 - 4.4 cm / 1 1/2 - 1 7/8 “
