Butterfly populations are a very good indicator of the health of an area's ecosystem !!
Also known as the Malay Baron
Euthalia monina prefers small clearings, glades and trails in primary rainforests, with heavy rainfall, at elevations of 0–1,000 m. (0–3,281 ft) above sea level.
Males of Euthalia monina have blackish or dark brown wings, with a blue green iridescence on the outer part.
The wings of the females are dark brown with pale greyish markings.
The species is unusual in that the male is polymorphic with at least 3 different forms found in Singapore.
Females, like the males, can often be found feeding on fallen fruits along jungle paths.
* As members of the Brush Footed (Nymphalidae) family, they use their shorter pair of front legs for food tasting and their two pairs of longer rear legs for propulsion.
Their estimated lifespan is approx. 14 days.
Diet: caterpillars take Clidemia hirta (Melastomataceae), Diospyros melanoxylon (Ebenaceae), Macaranga hullettii, Mallotus subpeltatus (Euphorbiaceae), and Shorea robusta (Dipterocarpaceae).
Diet: adults prefer to feed from rotting fruit and males also take salt and nutrients by puddling.
Wingspan: 5 – 7 cm. / 2 – 2.8 in “
Family: Nymphalidae
