Butterfly populations are a very good indicator of the health of an area's ecosystem !!
Also known as the Variable Beautymark.
Rhetus periande are found in most of Central and South America, ranging from Mexico through to Brazil and Argentina.
Their preferred terrain is around forest edges and along riverbanks.
They have an extremely fast flight.
The male has hindwings with curved, broad tails. The wings are black on the dorsal side with large blue inner parts and red spots on the hindwings. The ventral side is brown with longitudinal white stripes and red lines at the inner margins of the forewings and red spots at the base of the hindwing tails.
When feeding, the adults fly from flower to flower, compelled by the search for pollen to consume.
They are attracted to the bright colors and distinctive shapes of flowers, thus becoming a pollinator in its search for food.
Potential predators include spiders, birds and bats.

Avg. Wingspan: 2.5 - 3 cm / .98 - 1.18 ”
Diet: caterpillars feed on leaves of host plants, particularly plants within the Euphorbiaceae family.
Diet: adults feed on flower nectar, especially from flowering plants such as Lantana, Eupatorium, and Vernonia, and mineral deposits from stream banks.
Family: Riodinidae
The single biggest threat to butterfly survival is habitat destruction!!
