(Eurytides epidaus)
Butterfly populations are a very good indicator of the health of an area's ecosystem !!
Also known as the Long-tailed Kite Swallowtail.
   Eurytides epidaus is found in Mexico and most of Central America.
   They live around the banks of rivers and ponds, often forming groups.
   There are 3 recognized subspecies, including Eurytides epidaus epidaus (southern Mexico, Eurytides epidaus tepicus in western Mexico and Eurytides epidaus fenochionis in south western Mexico.
   They are a medium sized white butterfly with concave outer edges on the forewings and scalloped outer edges on the hindwings, each bearing a very long, thin tail.
   The forewings are adorned with discreet brown lines, marginal and extending from the costal edge.    The hindwings are adorned with the same discreet brown lines, one of which runs along the thin tail, and a red anal dot.
    The lifespan of the Eurytides Epidaus is estimated to be between 10 and 20 days.
   They are not currently listed in any Risk / Endangered Species groupings.

Diet: caterpillars feed on Annona
reticulata
 and Rollinia species.
Diet: adults feed primarily on nectar, but will occasionally take the juices from over ripe fruit.
Avg. wingspan: 4 – 4.5 cm / 1.57 – 1.77 “
Family: Papilionidae.
