Butterfly populations are a very good indicator of the health of an area's ecosystem !!
Cigaritis vulcanus are found in Sri Lanka, India, central Thailand, Vietnam and Java.
They are often found near flower corollas, where their fine hairs are easily covered with pollen that can then help pollinate other plants.
Their numbers peak during the south - west and north - east monsoons.
They inhabit scrub lands with sparse vegetation, hedge rows, scrub jungles and secondary forests.
Sunny, calm weather is the most favorable condition for finding them on wing, as they are much less active under cool or rainy conditions.
They are difficult to disturb when nectaring on flowers but when on wing, are able to fly fast and erratically.
Even when disturbed they return to the same spot almost immediately.
Typically, they are found near their host plants.
Predation is mainly by birds, spiders, praying ticks, lizards, rodents and ants.

Diet: caterpillars feed on Jujube, Zizyphus rugosa, Ixora longifolia, Clerodendrum siphomanthus, C. inerme, Allophylus cobbe, Ixora chinensis and Canthium parviflorum.
Diet: adults feed on flower nectar, bee honey, tree pulp, spoiled fruit juices, moisture from ponds
Avg. Wingspan: 2.6 - 3.4 cm / 1.02 – 1.33 “
Family: Lycaenidae
The single biggest threat to butterfly survival is habitat destruction!!
