(Symbrenthia lilaea)
Butterfly populations are a very good indicator of the health of an area's ecosystem !!
Also known as the Peninsular Jester.
Symbrenthia lilaea is a large butterfly that is found in South Asia and Southeast Asia, spread across India, Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, China, Taiwan, Malaysia, Sumatra, Kalimantan and Sulawesi.
They are usually seen flying alone or in small groups of two or three along narrow trails or forest valleys.
Their terrain preference is tropical rain forests.
Male individuals are often found basking in shaded areas.
The wet season forms have black dorsal wings with yellow orange markings, forewings with discoid streaks, short ribbons, preapical bands with two small dots on them.
The hind wings have a broad and narrow sub basal transverse band at the edge of the ribs, crossed by a line of black spots.
The ventral side of the wing is orange with many spots and stripes.
The antenna is black, the chest and stomach are black on the dorsal side, the ventral side is bright yellow.
The dry season form differs in both sexes.
The orange markings on the dorsal side are broader and paler in the middle, the short bands on the anterior and posterior portions of the wing are coalescing.
The ventral side is paler, with all the dark markings less clearly defined than in the wet- season form.
