Butterfly populations are a very good indicator of the health of an area's ecosystem !!
Ypthima Baldus is endemic to the Philippines, and is prevalent in Luzon and the country as a whole
Their entire range encompasses northern India, Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Korea, China, Taiwan, Japan, Malaysia, Sumatra and Kalimantan.
They can be found on the edge of grassy forests at altitudes of approx. 300 – 1200 m. They can also be found in garden areas.
The Rings species, as they are commonly referred to, are relatively small and attractive butterflies and who tend to fly weakly among low shrubbery and grasses.
They prefer to fly when the weather is cloudy to light rain and fly at a slow speeds, often seen visiting flowers to take nectar and basking with their wings fully open in sunny conditions.
* As members of the Brush Footed (Nymphalidae) family, they use their pair of shorter front legs for food tasting, and their two pairs of longer rear legs for propulsion.
Diet: caterpillars feed on the leaves of the host plant Anoxopus compressus and also grasses (Gramineae).
Diet: adults take nectar from various flowers.
Avg. Wingspan: 3.5 – 4 cm / 1.37 – 1.57”
