(Papilio alexanor)
Butterfly populations are a very good indicator of the health of an area's ecosystem !!
Also known as the Southern Swallowtail.
Papilio alexnor is native to parts of Europe and Asia.
In Europe, it’s found in regions like southeastern France, Greece, and parts of the Balkans.
They thrive in warm, temperate regions at altitudes up to 1700 m.
They have a preference for open areas, such as meadows and clearings in woodlands, where they can easily access flowers for nectar.
They are seen on wing from April to July in a single generation.
They are a diurnal species, meaning they are active during the day. When the sun comes up, they venture out to feed, mate, and go about their daily activities.
Night time is primarily used for resting.
Males are often seen patrolling areas, looking for receptive females.
When they find one, there’s a delicate dance where the male flutters around the female, showcasing his vibrant wings, trying to impress her.
If she is interested, she might allow the male to mate with her.
After mating, the female starts her search for suitable places to lay her eggs, ensuring the next generation’s survival.
They are known for their graceful, playful flight.
They are known to flutter and glide, often moving from flower to flower in search of nectar.                       Occasionally, they might find them basking in the sunlight, especially in the morning, to warm up their wings for the day’s activities.
Papilio alexanor is similar to Papilio machaon in appearance, however, the basal third of the forewing is not entirely black but bordered basally and distally by a broad black band.
The bands are continued across the hindwing, also bordering the yellow basal area.
The main colors on the wings of both sexes are greenish blue and yellow.
The top side of the wings is bright blue green, especially in the sun.
This is next to the light yellow parts.
The dorsal side is a softer yellow with small blue and black spots.
The wings are somewhat pointy in appearance, and the hind wings have small tails sticking out.
The wings also have black lines around the edges.
There are white and blue spots within these lines.     Near the small tails on the back wings, there’s a red orange spot with a blue half-moon shape around it.

   Birds are  their main predators.
